Luminate Holds 2nd Annual Bob Pollard Surf Event

A crisp knee high groundswell greeted contestants who showed up with their longboards, costumes, and coolers to this year’s Bob Pollard Surf Memorial.  Just over $2,000 was donated to the Bob Pollard Trust, setup to help raise the young children left behind by local surfer Bob Pollard.  The family oriented day saw guerrillas, indians, doctors, and cavewomen setting up their beach chairs at Rexhame Beach in Marshfield for an afternoon of burgers and potato salad.

The kids surfed first, and had the crowd on their feet.  In the boys division, Granger Dickinson paddled out in his suit and tie, earning the third place trophy with his calm and collected style.   Daniel Hickey, donning an oversized cheeseburger on his head, surfed neck and neck with Marshfield charger Patrick Lillis.  In the end though, 10 year old Patrick was able to muscle into the biggest lefts of the day and shuttle the first place trophy back to his Brant Rock home in his mother’s mini van.

The judges really had their work cut out for them in the Girls division.  Everybody surfed with smooth creativity, but Haley Smith, Brianna, and Katie Lillis stood out most.  By the time the horn blew, it was Katie who took first, making it a clean Lillis sweep of the kids divisions.  Brianna and Haley rounded out the field, in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In the Teens division, James McGragan, dressed in his high school cap and gown, took third for thoughtful noseriding and good posture.  Rasta Mon Andy Brovitz took 2nd, but Ocean Bluff local Andrew Klier stole the show.  Having heard about the contest only a week ago, Andrew had never surfed.   He borrowed a longboard and trained everyday, dawn to dusk.   Showing up with an impressive display of spins and his Cinderella story, the judges gave him the nod.

Just after the Ladies division finished up, dark storm clouds crept up on the contest site.  As thunder cracked and the sky opened up, the results were announced, prizes awarded, and donated gear raffled off.  Conveniently, Teens winner Andrew Klier won his very first surfboard, generously donated by Jon Chino Surfboards.

In lieu of paddling out, Mens and Legends divisions were judged purely on costume and general style.  In the Legends division, Andy Boothroid took first for manning the grill all day in his traditional French baguette boy outfit.  In the Mens division, Saadi Barbar took first for his outrageous club-guy outfit and for showing up at 6 am for the afternoon event.

Thank you very much to all who showed up to have a great time and support such a great cause!
